From the outside, the relationship between this particular student and Professor was rather strange but only if you were looking hard enough at it.
To a passing eye, it was more or less the same, Professor Snape sneering and sharp words to a Gryffindor, but the reactions of the receiving party were what gave most pause.
Rose Ameilie Lupin has grown a strange amount of patience for the cranky Potions Professor. Maybe it was because of something she needed, but honestly who would spend their free time on a Monday afternoon actually doing their potions essay that was due on Wednesday in the potions classroom?
It seemed Professor Snape was brewing something, as it was.
The girl at the table, parchment rolled out, book flipped open, wrinkled her nose as Snape added another ingredient to the cauldron he was working at.
"Ugh, that one is the worst so far."
Honestly, the whole room smelt really bad; it was a wonder why no one came down to figure out what the hell the smell was. But she supposed no one came down here while Snape was working.
Except her, of course. Because she was trying to get this essay done before... well. You know.
She was honestly trying to make for friendly conversation, but she knew that Snape would not take the bait. She had been down here, a couple of nights before the full moon, every month since she began at Hogwarts, and it was the same routine. She would pull out of him whatever thing they would be studying the day of the full moon, just in case the night before was awful, all so she wouldn't fall behind. She was lucky if the moon fell on a weekend. Those were much easier.

There were many things a Potion Master at Hogwarts needed to brew – a potion for his classes in order for them to have an example, or a potion the headmaster commanded him to make, such as the wolfsbane potion for the Lupins, though he didn’t really like the whole making a potion for the werewolf who almost killed him bit. However, it was worth it in the end – his loyalty was to Dumbledore and Lily. So long as he did his best to keep her safe, he would do anything for him.
[break][break]
However, being a professor at Hogwarts also had its downfalls. For the misanthrope who preferred to be secluded in his dungeons, he had to deal with people – and not just any people, children. Arrogant. Idiotic. There were a lot of his students in general who failed to live up to his expectations and he ended up failing them. He did not accept failure either. Which meant the anti-social professor had to deal with many a detention for those who failed to do well in his class.
[break][break]
This was not one of those instances. Unfortunately, the Lupin girl had taken to doing her homework in his classroom occasionally, usually prior to her – ah – time of the month. If he had to pick a Gryffindor, she would be his favorite – but he also hated Gryffindors, so it was like picking the best out of a handful of rotten eggs.
[break][break]
When she commented on the potion he was brewing, he didn’t even glance towards her. “You can decide to leave if you prefer. Otherwise, I would ask that you keep the peanut gallery quiet.”

Rose turns her eyes to the Potions master, who wasn't looking at her and gave a grin.
"Peanuts? Do you have any? I'm famished. I could go for some peanuts."
She giggled slightly, flipping her hair over her shoulder and smoothed out the parchment before her. She really wished she had brought ballpoint pens with her this time. Quills and ink were too much effort for feet of potions essay writing. it took forever because about every fifth word or so she'd run out of ink. A self-inking quill would be nice too, but, you know, that was basically what a ballpoint pen was anyway.
"It's not that bad," she said with a smirk. "I rather like where I'm at right now."
She giggled again, looking at her half-done essay she dropped her quill for the moment and dug around in her coat pocket, procuring a half eaten bar of chocolate and began to snack on it while she watched the potions master at work.
By the smell of it, it was very nearly done. It just needed to change colour and they'd be good to go for another month. "I know I've said this every year, but thank you. Only a couple of more months of dealing with me and my furry problem."

Severus glanced at Rose for just a moment and let out an amused ‘hmph’ before his eyes flicked back to the potion, taking extra care to make sure it was brewed perfectly, as always. Not because he wanted to make sure it was perfect for the girl or that insufferable brother of hers, but because he was a bit of a perfectionist himself. If he was going to do this, he was going to do it right. [break][break] “I don’t keep food in my classroom. However, I do have a bit of hemlock in the cupboard if you are that desperate.” This was, of course, sarcastic, as he suggested that she take poison instead of peanuts. A bit of dark humor, but Severus found it funny, though he didn’t really show it too much. His face was blank and other than his words he seemed focused on the potion completely. [break][break] “I can’t imagine why.” He seriously couldn’t. He didn’t know why she seemed to spend so much time with him. While normally he would complain about it – he had grown accustomed to her, though he would never admit that aloud. While he knew of her ulterior motives in that she likely wanted to know what was going to be in class, so she needn’t worry too much about her condition getting in the way, he couldn’t think that would be enough pull to keep her coming here. Of course, she was intelligent and managed to get past his high standards for NEWT level students and beyond, it wasn’t like she would be able to get a job with her condition. [break][break] His eyes flicked towards her, seeing the chocolate in her hands and gave her a slightly annoyed look. “You better not get any of that on your essay. I will be sure to dock points if there is any sign of it on the parchment.” [break][break] Pausing for a moment when she thanked him, he was honestly slightly taken aback. While she had said it before, he hadn’t ever gotten used to the feeling of actually being thanked for his work – not even Dumbledore seemed to say ‘thank you’ for what he did for him. Soon continuing his work and giving the potion a couple of stirs he glanced at her for a moment and gave her a hint of a smile. That was the most anyone had ever really gotten out of him unless it was for a sadistic type of pleasure. “I only do this because Dumbledore requested it of me. If it was my choice, you’d be in that shack like your brother was while he was in school.”

To any onlooker, Professor Snape suggesting that she eat the hemlock would seem like a death threat. But she rolled her eyes.
"I'm sure you would like that, wouldn't you? Let's put that down as another way to kill the werewolf."
She grinned at him although she knew he wouldn't see it. "I think it's my company, really. Can't say I can find the witty banter anywhere else in this school."
At his comment, her hand was about to touch the parchment to shift it slightly away, and she looked to her hand. The thumb of the hand which had been holding the chocolate bar just a moment ago had melted chocolate on it.
"Can't have none of that," she muttered, but still loud enough for him to hear.
She wrapped up the chocolate again, sticking the thumb into her mouth a moment to clean the chocolate off. She gave him a pout, pulling her hair over her should looking up at him with wide, watery eyes.
"Now, come on Severus, that was harsh. You wouldn't subject a pretty lady as such as myself to such a fate? What have I done to deserve that?"
She smirked. "I would think you'd still do it, anyway. Since if you didn't I would have to. And I assume you wouldn't want the squall of a person that I am to come through your potion stores."
She chuckled.

To say he wasn’t amused would be a lie. He had to admit, while he didn’t tend to like interacting with people in general, at least she was a little bit amusing and would pass the time a bit faster than it would normally seem to pass. [break][break] “It would certainly count as a method if one ever encountered such a need.” He stirred a couple more times as the potion began to change colors. Perfect. Another perfect batch of wolfsbane. Proud of himself he began to get a few bottles ready. [break][break] “Oh I’m sure I’m the highlight of your day,” If one couldn’t tell that was sarcasm, they weren’t listening to his tone of voice. Once finishing bottling the potion he looked towards her as she cleaned off her thumb. [break][break] For a moment, Severus felt a pang of guilt, seeing her watery eyes, though his face did not betray him and show this at all. Stone faced he watched her as she spoke and he couldn’t help but chuckle ever so slightly when she suggested that she would be going through his stores. He had to admit that was a reason for doing this – another reason had come up through the years: he actually liked her a little bit. And for Severus that was incredibly difficult for anyone to do. [break][break] “You do have a point.” He wasn’t even arguing about the ‘pretty girl’ part. Though if asked directly about it he would deny it – even if his thoughts were otherwise. Unfortunately for Severus, he didn’t know about her mother’s little… surprise and so he was affected by it just as everyone else was – but he was also devoted and obsessed with Lily and he was a very skilled Occlumens which made it easier to hide. [break][break] “It would not do well if there was an unmedicated werewolf running around Hogwarts.” He looked away and began to clean up since the potion was done. “That, and you would likely end up much like your brother, in the hospital wing after each time. It’s fairly common for people like you to hurt yourselves if you don’t have access to humans to kill.”

The potion changed colour and she sighed. Her time was up here, unfortunately, as the potion being done she was out of excuses for being down here. Rolling her eyes, she slid off the stool she had been sitting on and gave a wave of her wand at the parchment. It rolled up, and her ink capped itself before she stored the items into her book bag.
She lifted her arms over her head giving a languid stretch, turning left and right, yawning loudly and smirked.
"Oh, it most definitely is. The highlight of each month, actually." While his retort was sarcasm, hers was filled with truth. She grinned, walking towards him and taking one of the bottles he hadn't corked yet and lifted it to drink from it, downing a little less than half before pulling it away to cough roughly.
She had found in most years, it was easier to try to get as much down in a breath as she could. Less time she would have to spend drinking it. A shudder raced through her body as she pulled a face. Ugh. Perfectly disgusting.
"Once again, perfectly brewed," she complimented before finishing off the bottle. The potion had even still been warm which helped, a little. Cold wolfsbane tasted even worse.
She took the others and put them in her bag, to deliver to Remus, another reason why she hung out here. So he wouldn't have to bother bringing it to her brother.
"And that would be the most absolute shame, correct? My face being all scarred up like that? It works for him, that rugged look, but I am much to fair for that."

Usually, Severus Snape could tell if someone was being sarcastic or genuine, but in this case, either it was because he refused to believe it was genuine, it was actually quite difficult to tell. Severus looked at her, his cold eyes boring into her before he swallowed quickly and found his voice again. [break][break] “If that is true, you lead quite a sorry excuse for a life.” He watched as she took one of the bottles and drank it. To be fair, if he could, he would make it taste better for her – though not for her brother. However, it was a delicate potion and had to be treated with care. Regardless, he had looked into it before for her sake – though he wasn’t sure why he even cared about it. If it was more appetizing, beasts like her and her brother would be more likely to drink it and cause less harm. At least that was what he told himself. [break][break] “Of course it is. I brewed it.” He was quite proud of his potion making skills, though he much preferred to take her brother’s job when it came to what to teach at Hogwarts. [break][break] “Perhaps. I don’t quite find his ‘rugged’ looks to be… something to be admired.” He took a seat at his desk and procured a scroll from one of the drawers. He set it on the desk and looked at her to come and grab it. “You do have a certain… air to you that would not work well for scars.” Did he just compliment her? [break][break] “I expect you will make every effort to attend my class regardless of how you ‘feel’. However, sometimes it cannot be avoided and it would be a shame if one of my top pupils fell behind.” He gestured to the scroll essentially saying it contained his lesson plans and the homework assignment on the parchment.

If one honestly asked her why she spent so much time down here, she wouldn't be able to give a complete answer. She would come up with some excuse: she needed help with the essay, or she wasn't understanding something.. or... yeah.
But the fact of the matter was, she had drifted down here because A) the guilt of her brother and her friends being complete asses to him and B) well, she drifted to where she felt most comfortable. Finding comfort in Severus Snape was a strange idea for most; it was hard for her to bring herself to make friends with any of her classmates. Mostly in fear of rejection. Tonks was a happy accident, a happy accident that she was not sure that if she knew what she was, or not and honestly, she wouldn't disturb whatever friendship she had with the girl over something that trivial.
Okay. her identity was not trivial, but, anyway.
She gave Snape a look, her eyes narrowing. "Now see here, Severus. I'll have none of that self-deprecating shit from you too. You're supposed to be the cocky one with a sharp tongue."
She laughed, and eyebrow raising as he waved her over to his desk. Had that been a compliment? She snickered, shaking her head.
She tilted her head, a quizzical look on her face as she walked over.
"You know I make every effort, Professor."
Ah! He had just given her the lesson plans for that day, and she looked up at him, eyes sparkling in joy.
"Top Pupil and a Gryffindor; who knew, right?"
She gave him a grin before throwing her arms around his neck. "Thanks, Uncle Sev! You're the best!"

His eyebrow quirked up as she used his first name and talked back to him. He didn’t quite expect such a response from her, most people would agree with him – he was sure her brother and his little band of delinquents would agree as well. However, he did know he was not the best company to be around – after all he drove away the one person he loved more than anything back in Hogwarts. In some ways his cold demeanor was a way to protect himself from that happening again – because if he didn’t care about anyone, then he could not get hurt by anyone either. [break][break] “Am I? If I recall it was your brother and his friends who were arrogant at school. I am logical – I have confidence in my abilities because I am good at what I do. Cocky implies I have confidence in something I fail at.” His words were slow and deliberate, punctuating his points with a bit of emphasis as he spoke. [break][break] However, after she walked over to him, he raised an eyebrow again. She was a curious one, and despite his intelligence and abilities to understand that around him, she was a puzzle he hadn’t solved yet. At times, she reminded him of Lily, and others she reminded him of her insolent older brother. But those moments when she reminded him of Lily were bittersweet. Lily had moved on and she was simply a reminder of what could have been and what he would never have. [break][break] “One of my top pupils,” He corrected, “Gryffindors tend to be arrogant and fail to grasp the concepts needed to succeed in my class. But you are one of those rare exceptions.” Much like Lily was one of the few exceptions of a kind young woman who actually showed she cared about him – at least until he screwed that up. He hoped she would forgive him, perhaps now that he had gotten onto the right track, but he had come to the conclusion that would never happen.
[break][break]His face tinged pink ever so slightly when she wrapped her arms around his neck, his eyes wide. There were many things Severus Snape had planned for – but this was not one of them. He did not wrap his arms around her, and mostly sat in shock trying to comprehend why this was happening, his pale face highlighting the fact he was blushing slightly at her gesture. [break][break] Uncle? Sev? His breath hitched, and he stopped breathing while she held him. No one had called him ‘Sev’ in a long while. At least not in a way that wasn’t mockingly like the Death Eaters occasionally did. “Thanks, Professor.” The other time he didn’t correct her, but there was something in him that was screaming that this was getting too personal and he couldn’t let himself fall into the hole – too bad he didn’t realize it but he was already in too deep.

Rose chuckled, shaking her head with a sigh.
"You know what I mean, dammit!"
She smiled at him, "yeah, well. I was a hatstall. I should've been in Ravenclaw, probably."
She shuddered, "but Ravenclaws are nosy. Despite the fact that they're always in the library, noses in books."
She snickered, "arrogance and failing to grasp concepts is exactly what I needed; to be left alone, so I could work on passing classes and gaining grades for a future I don't even have."
Ah; there she went again, hadn't she just scolded him for being self-deprecating? Her jaw worked a moment before she sighed.
She pulled away from him, releasing him from her charm and torture to unravel the scroll and read it for a moment. "Right, right, of course."
She looked at him, eyes bright, "Thanks, Professor."

Severus shook his head when she suggested she should be in Ravenclaw. If it were up to him, he’d much prefer if she were a Slytherin, however as much as he hated to admit it, she fit in Gryffindor. She was much like those arrogant boys he hated so much, but she was better than them – at least she showed him a shred of respect. He showed her the kindness he had only experienced from Lily before, and Lily herself was a true Gryffindor. [break][break] “No. You’re a Gryffindor, as much as I hate to admit it. You possess all of the annoying traits of your house, but also the kindness many of your peers fail to exhibit towards those who are not like you. Hypocrites. This… war is for ‘equality’, but they refuse to accept those who don’t think like they do. Why would it matter if someone believe muggleborns should not be accepted at Hogwarts, so long as they don’t try to force their opinion on another? That’s one of the many flaws your brother and his little band of idiots have. They preach that they want make the world a better place for all, but what they don’t tell you is that their ‘all’ only includes those they agree with.” [break][break] That little speech had shown that she hit a slightly sore spot. That was what he disliked about Gryffindors in general, and just about everyone. In Slytherin, while they all had strong views, it wasn’t one of the key qualities to stand up and fight for it, like the so called ‘bravery’ of Gryffindor. Of course, because of Gryffindors and their brash demeanor, many Slytherins felt they had to fight for what they believed in else they would be erased in the ‘ideal’ world these Gryffindors stood up for. [break][break] Not that he believed that the Death Eaters were in the right, but he did still believe in his beliefs of muggleborns being lesser, with few exceptions. It was like believing werewolves were dangerous, even if Rose was an exception. There would always be exceptions to the rules. [break][break] “Now you sound like your brother. Just over this summer he was complaining about how after this war was over he would not be able to do anything. I thought of you as better than that. I didn’t think you would just roll over and take it. Perhaps my judgement of you was flawed.” [break][break] Even after she released the hug, his normally pale face was tinged pink. “I still expect you in class and to perform your very best.” Some professors here, he had noticed, had cut slack on her – because they believed she wouldn’t really need it, though honestly, she didn’t need it, seeing as she tended to excel on her own without the slack she was cut. However, he never let up on her – it wasn’t necessarily about teaching her potions but teaching her responsibility and how to work hard no matter what obstacles were in her way. He disliked the smart ones who didn’t put in much effort and still succeeded. That wasn’t what he pushed for – he pushed for the work ethic that would come from being pushed hard.

Her face was tinged pink, and she stared at him with wide surprised eyes, jaw agape. Her eyes narrowed at him in thought. In a way though, it was similar to what she had been thinking. Sure, Voldemort could be defeated, but for what? The next bigot to step up and makes things worse? She sighed. When would life as a werewolf be liveable? And she wouldn't have to focus on survival?
She laughed though, "I'm not just rolling over and taking it!" She tched. "Honestly Professor Snape, it's like the only people here who believe I can do anything are you and my brother. Maybe McGonagall, but knowing her she would only give me a disapproving stare if I was late with anything. You'd actually take the marks off with some line of 'you knew this was going to happen, you've been living with it your entire life. Your condition is not an excuse.' And then fail me."
She grinned at him still, "of course I'll be in class. Possibly battered, but still there."
Her smile softened, "I appreciate the effort of you pushing me, to force me to believe that I can be more than my condition. I really have appreciated it all these years, Professor Snape; you've been my favourite Professor because you didn't see the condition, you just saw the student that needed to do her work."
She laughed softly, looking up at the dungeon ceiling. "Again, thank you. I'm going to miss having class with you. And that's probably the bittersweetness of the situation. While I know I can do anything I want, and I'll push for it, strive for it - it's whether the world will allow me to do so."

The corners of his mouth quirked up into a sort of half smile. That was the girl he had grown to know over the last several years. To be quite honest, he had come to school expecting to hate her – and for a short time he did, but then she proved to him that she was worth his time and effort. She proved to him how she wasn’t like the others, and that she was unique and driven. It really was a shame about her condition. [break][break] It would be a bittersweet feeling when she would graduate from this school. He hated to admit it but he knew he would miss her. She was his best student despite what he might say about her only being ‘one’ of his best, and he actually enjoyed spending time with her each month like this. He wouldn’t admit that, not at least while she was still at school. [break][break] He picked up his quill and quickly started writing down some notes for the other Potions professor for the younger years and what he expected them to teach, else their students would fail miserably when they got up to his classes. His eyes still glanced towards Rose, mostly distracting himself with the writing as to keep himself under control. [break][break] “Then I have done my job thoroughly,” His lips were still slightly curved up, which could be seen even when he wasn’t looking right at her. “It’s not often I come across a student like you. Especially not one in Gryffindor.” He paused for a moment, the scritching of his quill stopping and he set it down and looked towards her. “Don’t ever say you don’t have a future in my presence again. Keep that attitude and keep pushing. It would be a shame if your talents were wasted because of that depressing mindset of yours.” [break][break] He took in a breath; his face having calmed down and the pink disappearing mostly. He folded his hands on the desk and looked directly at her with a very serious and calm look on his face. “I expect great things from you, Rose.”

He was really handsome when he smiled.
Rose shook with the thought as she stared at her Potions Master, eyes wide. She couldn't even believe such a thought crossed into and through her mind. But there it was, and it was a truth. He really was very handsome. The scowling had become endearing to her, but that slight upturn... she felt her heart thump against her chest and she looked away, having to focus elsewhere. Focus, Lupin!
She returned his half grin, crossing her arms.
"Very thoroughly," she replied with a nod. "Well, a werewolf has gotta do, what a werewolves gotta do. I suppose if anyone has the nerve to succeed when the world doesn't want them to, it'd be a Gryffindor."
She smiled softly, however, she found herself surprised once again at the tenacity in his voice. Did he just scold her for looking down at herself? When had he grown attached to her like this? She felt the tears in her eyes and she couldn't help it. She hugged him again.
"Thank you, you are seriously the best."
She felt like she was sparkling if that was even a possible thing. She pulled away rubbing the moisture from her eyes. It wasn't working, obviously. She sniffed, her voice trembled as she spoke again.
"I'm really going to miss you, Uncle Sev."
Another sniff. "May I propose a final year project?"
She looked at him, eyes shining with tears. "Will you teach me to brew the Wolfsbane? Remus is shit at potions; and since I have an affinity..."
